WHERE JAMB HAS FAILED

The actions of Jamb shows that they are less concerned about the physical and psychological well-being of their candidates. It is a shameful thing that an educational body like jamb is not concerned about what their inefficiency will cause to its candidates. As someone who is now overcoming the trauma jamb caused on me, I stand to be the voice of innocent candidates who were left helpless in shambles by Jamb’s inefficiency. In other words, candidates who do not have any alternative than to depend solely on when luck calls on them as regarding attempting jamb before they can progress to the next phase in life. I hope jamb reads the highlights of where I think they have failed, and do justice to the affected candidates in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination   (UTME, 2020).

It is inhumane for jamb to make its candidates centre far away from their place of residence. This has repeatedly happened to candidates since the inception of jamb. Mostly, the computer base examination. Students have missed The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination because of the distance of their examination centres. If it is a must that the examination is computer based, jamb should make sure that their centres are close to their place of residence. The insecurity in our own country is enough to tell you that our youngsters can’t leave their homes as early as 3:30 a.m. to meet up with an examination that is to start at 7:00 a.m. You can also dare the Lagos traffic, take a move at 5:00 a.m and see if you can easily meet up with an appointment (within Lagos) that is made for 7:00 a.m.

Take a look at this scenario, What else than Satanic can you describe this action?
A brother of mine registered for the  Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination 2020 as soon as the date for registration was announced. He chose his desired location as Lekki, but when he would print his photo card, he discovered that his centre was in Apapa. We couldn’t imagine the traffic in the street of Lagos as early as 5am. He is to write the examination by 7: 00 a.m on Monday, 16th of March, 2020. But after leaving Ajah by 5:00 a.m, he arrived at the venue by 9:00am, and wasn’t allowed to sit for the exam. Candidates who were in for the examination which was to kick off by 7:00 a.m, came out of the hall by 11:00 a.m, meaning that they didn’t start the examination until around 9:00am when my brother arrived, because they wouldn’t have written the exam for four hours. Another candidate who came earlier said that they started the exam by 9: 00 a.m and some people were still allowed to enter the hall at past 9. No one knows what happened.

My brother didn’t write the examination and was just hanging around the centre for hours, hoping maybe they would have a change of mind. The rich men whose children were not allowed left and said they will fly their children abroad or take their children to private institutions. What then will happen to the children of the poor? They will sit and weep till another year comes. Jamb, these children are too young for the trauma you are exposing them to. Imagine our young ones who have read and prepared for  The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for a year or more, but are being denied their rights due to reasons beyond their control. Some could write and some could not. Jamb, you are stealing their happiness and you are giving them hatred for the system and their country in return. They are still too young for all this. Jamb ought to consider that our young ones have emotions, too. It’s a pity that you are careless about their mental health. But, please, don’t traumatise our young ones by your inefficiency. Give everyone an equal chance to transit.

One thing I know is that jamb has never considered the effect of stress on students’ performance. This is Nigeria for you. Isn’t it? The stress that a candidate passes through in the examination centre, is enough to destabilize the candidate throughout the examination period. The stress and anxiety of getting to the examination centre, the stress of queuing under the sun and the stress of waiting in a stuffy computer room while waiting for the server to come up, is enough to set the pace for failure in students who cannot really manage/ cope with stressful events. I wish jamb had known the effect of stress on students’ performances, maybe they would have served us better.

I honestly feel jamb would take this write up as a challenge to improve their system of operation rather than an attack from me. I wish jamb success as they try to improve the system and find immediate solution to the affected candidates.
